Four-bedroom home a piece of Australian history that's looking for a new lease on life

This home has a long story, dating all the way back to the 1840s – and you could write its next chapter. Photos: McCann Properties.

It would be a crime to not consider this Gunning property as you look for your new home.

Built in 1847 to serve as the Gunning Police Barracks and Court of Petty Sessions building, 2 Wombat Street has since been converted into a home.

McCann Properties Real Estate Agent Ian Blackburn says this property truly is a piece of Australian history.

“It was the police station and Court of Petty Sessions for Gunning and the wider region until it was decommissioned at the turn of the 19th century.

“Instead of having people go to a senior court, more minor offences were dealt with at the property.”

“The original building was built in the late 1800s, but it now has new extensions with new rooms,” Ian says.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom property has a unique feel and is located on an approximately 3000 sqm block.

“The home is an older home, and it still feels like an older home from yesteryear,” Ian says.

“It doesn’t look like you’ve just bolted on something from Googong.”

The original building was built in the ‘brick nog’ construction method in the late 1800s, where a frame is filled with bricks.

2 Wombat Street has two verandahs – one with two bedrooms and a bathroom, while the other has the master bedroom and ensuite.

One of these wings is original, while the other has been added, and both connect to the main building by wide verandas.

And if you’re a fan of that historic look, Ian has good news for you.

“The addition still got the same bones throughout as the new extensions have been built in the same style as the original building,” he says.

The home features timber-lined ceilings, French doors, Australian cedar doors, architraves and skirting boards.

Throughout the house, there are ducted gas heating, panel heaters and a wood heater to chase away the winter chill.

The property also boasts spaces for entertaining, Ian says.

“It has the large, deep covered verandahs, but also a very private outdoor entertaining area.

There is an existing garden, a butler’s pantry, four parking spaces, a tack room for the horses, two lock-up garages with a car hoist and a dishwasher.

Surrounding the home are two stables, three sheds and 5000 and 1100-litre water tanks.

This is a chance to get in early on a growing community, Ian says.

“The school has doubled in size in the last 10 years.

“Gunning itself has got a great community, and a lot of infrastructure for a small town,” he says.

Gunning is a 30-minute drive away from the country towns of Goulburn and Yass, as well as the big city.

“You’re only half an hour from the outskirts of Canberra – and when I say the outskirts of Canberra, I mean Gungahlin.”

And if you move from a big city, Ian says 2 Wombat Street would be a great place to work from home.

“You can go into the office for a face-to-face meeting with the team, but ever since the COVID pandemic began, Zoom meetings from your living room are all the go now and there’s excellent internet at the property.”

Ian says a young family looking to put roots down and those looking for an investment property for Airbnb may want to add this one to their list as well.

“If you want to move to Gunning and live the quiet life, enjoy the community, that’s something you can do.”
