Eurobodalla Shire residents will be able to access help with chainsaw operations, debris management and removal, fencing and small civil works from Disaster Relief Australia after Eurobodalla Shire Council’s Bushfire Recovery Support Service arranged and funded extra help for people in need for the next five weeks.
Disaster Relief Australia volunteer teams comprising ex-military and emergency responders have been called in to help meet the growing needs of the Bushfire Recovery Support Service’s clients.
Recovery Support Service coordinator Jane Robertson said Disaster Recovery Australia’s presence has already made “a huge positive impact” to those affected.
“The initial clean up by Laing O’Rourke and Public Works was vital and extremely helpful, but 12 months on, many residents are finding they need trees felled and stockpiled, fence lines cleared for new fencing, and burnt materials removed,” she said.
“Disaster Relief Australia have generously put up its hand and has already begun conducting damage assessments for the more than 100 requests for assistance.
“It’s making a big difference to people’s feeling of wellbeing and control knowing they can now make repairs and improvements to their property.”
Disaster Relief Australia chief executive officer Geoff Evans said its work would include chainsaw operations, debris management and removal, fencing and small civil works.
“2020 was a challenging year, and 2021 is about rebuilding,” he said. “Disaster Relief Australia is keen to get back into communities still recovering from the Black Summer bushfires to assist in any way we can.
“We’re extremely proud of being offered the opportunity to collaborate with council, working together to rebuild and support the local community in its time of need.”
Community members needing assistance can contact Eurobodalla Bushfire Recovery Support Service on 02 4474 7434. Once contact is made, Disaster Relief Australia will conduct a damage assessment to confirm how it can assist.
