Traffic control measures will be in force along a South Coast road during work to repair flood damage.

Bega Valley Shire Council said the urgent repair works would be carried out on Mount Darragh Road from Thursday 7 August to 19 August, weather permitting.

The road runs for 57 km between Merimbula and Cathcart, also crossing Wyndham. The total ascent/descent along the road is 1368 m, with 9.8 km having a gradient of steeper than five per cent.

This marks the first stage of the restoration works, which will remediate damaged culvert infrastructure and help protect Cusacks Creek crossing from future weather events.

This project is being supported through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

This round of works will take place on Mount Darragh Road at Cusacks Creek crossing, Seven Mile Creek (about 500 m west of the Box Range Road intersection and 13 km west of the Princes Highway intersection) at South Pambula.

Further work will be carried out to repair the outlet side of the culvert once the required permits have been obtained, according to council.

In 2025, two of the Bega Valley Shire’s seven road fatalities were lost on the road, according to preliminary data from Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

Other satistics from TfNSW’s Centre for Road Safety also note that of the 15 lives lost on roads in Bega Valley Shire in the five years from 2013 to 2017, four were lost on Mount Darragh Road.

In the five years from 2018 to 2023, there were seven fatalities in the shire, one of which occurred on the road.

Contractors will be carrying out the works between 7 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Traffic control measures will also be in place during the works, with access reduced to a single lane.

Council advises motorists to expect delays.

“Council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation while these important works are undertaken,” a spokesperson said.
