Those with a passion and appreciation for Monaro history are being encouraged to apply for $53,000 in grants under the NSW Government’s Heritage Grants Program.

Local MP John Barilaro says the grants will help local communities care for and safe guard the building blocks of the region.

“Heritage is such an important aspect of the Monaro community, we are the caretakers for many iconic landmarks that represent our community and its rich history,” he says.

“Looking after our heritage is everyone’s responsibility and communities in Monaro play an important role in maintaining local history.”

Under the scheme, Snowy Monaro Regional Council and Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council will each receive $26,500 to be spent on local heritage grants and heritage advisory services for their respective areas.

The 2019-20 grants have seen $5.8 million awarded to 241 projects statewide. The categories included Aboriginal Cultural Heritage, Caring for State Heritage and Community Heritage.

Minister for Heritage, Don Harwin says protecting local heritage was an important step towards celebrating NSW’s history as a whole and maintaining a physical record of the past.

“Across NSW the Government is providing support for local heritage and indigenous groups to protect important heritage items and ensure communities maintain connection with their history” he says.
