What? That’s not right is it? Bombala won the League, Narooma won the AFL and Bega won the soccer. Well yes, they did – in the Mens Comps. No doubt there were celebrations in all three towns for a few days after the trophies were raised.
But has any one town ever won all three footy Premierships in the same year? Well, it happened this year in a town that is known for its long history of passionate support for its footy teams: Eden.
In a history-making rush of adrenalin, Eden’s women had a September full of successes, starting with a win for the Eden Tigrettes in the League Tag – a first since its inauguration in 2012. The following weekend saw the Women’s First Grade Soccer come away with the Grand Final trophy again, having won last year as well. Then five women from this team backed up the next Saturday to take out the Sapphire Coast AFL Women’s Premiership – their third in a row.
A footy hat-trick of hat tricks!
None were easy wins.
The Tigrettes went into battle with the strong Bombala High Heelers who had been undefeated over two years. They had never been held to a nil score until this game, losing 18-0 in a shock win for Eden.

The Killer Whales soccer team (affectionately known as the Killer Cows – think about it!) have long dominated this 21-year-old competition, having won more premierships than all other teams combined. They came from a goal down to defeat Wolumla Tigers 2-1. Wolumla has fielded a team most years of the comp but has never managed to take the trophy home.

And then the Eden Whalers Womens AFL team who has dominated the ladies comp since its inception 3 years ago, claimed their third premiership in a row with a 31 – 15 win over Tathra last weekend.
The social benefits of building a culture of support and admiration for teams of strong women cannot be ignored.
With so many young (and not so young) women getting themselves amongst deep heat and strappers, pulling on boots and complaining about the latest bruises and abrasions, their own siblings, children, and friends get caught up in the rush. I can’t think of better role models for a generation battling with increasing levels of obesity and anxiety issues than those that get down and dirty on the footy field every week.
So what makes Eden so damned good at women’s football – in whatever code you choose?
Only Eden knows the answer to that and that’s the way we like it!
