Disappointment for Candelo swimmers busting to get back into the water, with Bega Valley Shire Council forced to delay the opening of the pool.

Council’s Aquatic and Leisure Facilities Coordinator, Nicholas Hoynes, says while preparing for pre-season painting ahead of Monday’s (September 30) start to the season, specialist contractors discovered substantial issues with the concrete render in the pools as well as a problem with the expansion joint in the 50-metre pool, which has contributed to leaks from that pool.

“Civil and structural consulting engineers have inspected the Candelo swimming pools and they’ve developed a design specification to repair the render and the expansion joint,” Mr Hoynes says.

“The pools will then be repainted and available for swimming.”

Unfortunately, that might not be until mid-November; the price of a season ticket to the Candelo Pool will be reduced in line with the shorter season.

The following works will be carried out:

• Repair and waterproof the 50-metre swimming pool expansion joint to prevent leaks.

• Repair and waterproof existing concrete render and replace failed render in both swimming pools.

• Repaint both swimming pools, allowing time for the paint to cure.

• Refill and commission pools.

“We appreciate people’s patience while we’re working to fix these problems; we’ll let the community know how the works are progressing and when the Candelo Pool will open as soon as we can,” Mr Hoynes says.

No further details are available at this stage.

The repairs come in the middle of ongoing discussions around the future funding of the Bega Valley’s six public pools. Council says its committed to having six pools in line with community ambitions but needs to find a new way of funding them into the future.

About Regional will have more on the bigger issue on Monday morning. To get a head start you can view the Swimming Pools Strategy Discussion Paper and provide your feedback now via Council’s website. Comment closes on October 20.

Bega Valley Shire Council has been hosting community information sessions as part of the process, two remain:

• Bega Commemorative Civic Centre – Monday, September 30, 5:30 pm;
• Candelo Hall – Wednesday, October 2, 5:30 pm.

Outrageous! BVSC has known about the leak situation for at least 2 years – why wait until the opening of the season to announce closure for repairs? And worse, pretend that you’ve only just discovered it while preparing for pre-season painting! Why not start the repair work immediately following the pool’s seasonal closure? Far too logical presumably. Any time over the last couple of years would have sufficed. What a crock. See you at next Wednesday’s meeting.

Unbelievable…though typical.

Why did they leave it until spring to discover this work needs to be done?
