Community members and business owners are being asked to have their say and help shape final plans for safety improvements at a busy Narooma intersection.
The Australian and NSW governments are investing $3.5 million to upgrade the Princes Highway and Field Street intersection to improve safety, connectivity and network efficiency for all road users.
Transport for NSW Regional Director South Cassandra Ffrench said the proposed intersection upgrade would include the installation of traffic lights with pedestrian crossings on all four arms, new footpaths and kerb ramps, a repaved road surface and line-marking improvements.
“We heard community feedback on safety concerns at this intersection during recent consultation to inform transport improvements in the area,” Ms Ffrench said.
“Detailed analysis found an intersection upgrade including the installation of traffic lights would provide immediate improvement to safety, pedestrian connectivity and network efficiency through Narooma.
“To maintain traffic flow, highway traffic would have priority at the lights until a pedestrian activates the crossing or a vehicle approaches the intersection from Field Street or the holiday park driveway.
“Several options were investigated for the intersection upgrade, with traffic lights found to be the safest option. They will also have the least impact on surrounding property and parking, whilst also balancing the need for efficient vehicle movements on the highway.”
However, some residents are concerned the lights will lead to a backlog of traffic over Narooma Bridge.
Work to finalise the design of the proposed upgrade is continuing subject to community consultation. Community members and local business owners can provide feedback at a community drop-in session or via email at [email protected] until 9 March.
The drop-in session will be held on Saturday, 22 February, between 10 am and 2 pm at Nata Oval (just off the Princes Highway), Narooma. Project team members from Transport will be available to discuss the project and answer questions.
Subject to approvals, work on the upgrade is expected to start later this year and take about 12 weeks to complete, weather permitting. Transport will update the community when the timeline for work is confirmed.
