A Bombala school student has made the most of a unique artistic opportunity, turning her local garbage truck into a billboard for the environment of the southern Monaro.

Alex Reed, is the winner of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Resource and Waste artwork competition.

Her artwork is now proudly displayed on the side of the Remondis waste and recycling kerbside collection truck that services Bibbenluke, Bombala, Cathcart and Delegate each week.

Primary school students in Bombala and Delegate were asked to produce an artwork encouraging the community to reduce waste and increase their recycling.

“Alex is very engaged with her community and her artwork promotes an important recycling message. It looks great on the side of the kerbside collection vehicle,” says Mayor, John Rooney.

As the winning artist, Alex, now a student of Bombala High School also won a buddy bench for her old primary school – St Joseph’s.

“Buddy benches are a permanent place in the school with a special purpose,” Cr Rooney says.

“Children are encouraged to sit on the bench when they’re feeling left out, and when other students see this, they’re encouraged to go talk with them.

“Council is thrilled to present St Joseph’s Primary School with a buddy bench.”

Alex’s drawing features the districts most famous native animal the platypus and reminds us of the stewardship we all have over the environment, the recycling logo, and the words ‘Keep Our Community Clean’ drive the message home.

BUDDY BENCH`S are a great idea & every school should have at least one……as long as the kids using them don`t get ridiculed by their peers…..the introduction & resulting acceptance & benefits have to be monitored & evaluated.

Will school counsellors keep their jobs ?
