Residents and visitors to five areas in the Snowy Monaro region have been told to boil their water, “effective immediately”, until further notice.
The alert has been issued for Jindabyne, Lakewood, Leesville, High Country and The Station Resort.
A Snowy Monaro Regional Council spokesperson explained turbidity levels of Lake Jindabyne had passed the control point set by NSW Health.
“This is due to recent wet weather and its associated run-off into the lake,” they said.
“Once the water in the reticulation network meets NSW Health control standards the alert will lift. Once confirmation has been received, we will immediately lift the alert.”
The spokesperson advised that any water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a “rolling boil” to make it safe.
“Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool and stored in a refrigerator in a clean, lidded container,” they said.
“Use bottled water – or treated and cooled water as described above – for drinking, washing uncooked food (such as salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling, and for your pet’s drinking water.
“Children should take bottled water or cool boiled water to school. Dishes should be washed in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher.”
The alert does not apply to East Jindabyne, Tyrolean Village, Kalkite, or Berridale.
The advice should be followed until further notice.
