Designed for simple, comfortable living and built from four steel shipping containers, 9 Binnowee Place at Bawley Point champions sustainability in one of the most beautiful hamlets in the region.

Halfway between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla, Bawley Point is a small community with a mixture of long-time locals and regular Canberra weekenders. Surrounded by pristine beaches and native rainforest, the quiet village offers peaceful living without the inconvenience of through traffic.

Raine & Horne sales agent Robert Granger grew up in the region and knows it well.

“Bawley Point is very popular with families since it’s so kid-friendly, he says.

“It has multiple beaches, nature trails and wildlife spots to explore, and you can often spot older kids jumping off The Gantry as a bit of a rite of passage.

“9 Binnowee Place is in a prime location in the village, on a large block bordered by a reserve that offers great privacy and acts as a convenient shortcut to shore.”

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home was brought to life in 2020 by the current owner, who is a builder by trade. The unique container design, encased in Spotted Gum, was built with fireproofing and sustainability in mind. It was also featured in Owner Builder magazine in 2021.

“Everywhere you look, the current owner has made a feature of something recycled, rescued or refurbished,” Robert says.

“A great example of this is the timber balustrade on the stairs. The stairs themselves are cut from a single Norfolk Island pine tree, but the balustrade was salvaged from a burned tree nearby and hand-crafted into something beautiful.

“There are loads of little touches like this throughout the house, and they all have a story of their own.”

Full of rustic character, the ground level hosts an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area, the main bathroom, and a combined laundry and pantry.

Floor-to-ceiling windows make this space seem larger than life, keeping the beautiful natural surroundings front of mind and taking advantage of the home’s north-facing aspect for a sunny, airy feel. A timber combustion fireplace brings extra warmth and ultra-cosy ambience in cool weather.

“Sliding doors can be opened in the warmer months to enjoy that coastal breeze, and if it’s really hot, you can simply pop on the air conditioning and relax under the ceiling fans,” Robert says.

“Yes, this is a sustainable home, but it isn’t lacking in any modern comforts.”

Timber accents, including bamboo floors, recycled hardwood cabinetry and marine plywood walls, flow from the ground floor upstairs. Here, the master bedroom awaits, with its own ensuite and private balcony. A few steps in the other direction are two more bedrooms, each with a view to the serene outdoors.

9 Binnowee Place sits on a battle axe block of 1147 square metres. The low-maintenance garden houses an outdoor bath and shower connected to hot water, a charming chicken coop and a small greenhouse ready for cultivation.

There’s also a large shed with a garage and workshop space, as well as a small studio perfect for visitors or as a retreat for a teenager. It has been run successfully as an Airbnb by the current owner.

Two 10,000-litre water tanks and a 6.6 kW solar system keep running costs low and offer a foundation for self-sufficiency.

“Number 9 is a great opportunity for anyone looking to invest in a holiday home or wants to move to a tightly held community that really embodies the ultra-enviable coastal lifestyle,” Robert says.

“There’s nothing left to do – just move in, make it your own and enjoy a simpler life by the beach.”

The home is priced by negotiation, in the vicinity of $1,250,000.
