Police have charged a man with attempted murder after a pedestrian was seriously injured in an alleged hit-and-run in the Snowy Monaro region earlier this year.

Emergency services were called to Mittagang Road in Cooma over reports of a crash early in the morning on 4 January 2025, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Officers arrived to find a 23-year-old man suffering serious injuries after allegedly being hit by a car.

Paramedics treated him for a head injury before taking him to hospital in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, the driver of the car allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Police began an investigation, and the next day, the alleged driver, 22-year-old Joshua James McDonnell, went to Queanbeyan Police Station, where he was handed several charges.

These charges included dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and failing to stop and render assistance.

Following further enquiries, police charged him with attempted murder on Monday (31 March).

Mr McDonnell, who is from the Queanbeyan-Palerang region, then faced the Cooma Local Court on Wednesday (9 April).

He made no application for bail and it was formally refused before the matter was adjourned to 4 June.
