Araluen Road, southeast of Braidwood, reopened on 23 April after closing in mid-December when bushfires swept through the region.
Removal of debris and repairs to fire and flood damaged sections of the road have been conducted, however the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) is warning drivers to only use the road if absolutely necessary.
“While QPRC has now removed the road-closed signs from Araluen Road, we remind drivers to restrict travel to essential travel only until COVID-19 restrictions are lifted,” said a council spokesperson.
Both the QPRC and Eurobodalla Shire Council (ESC) – the latter region through which the road passes to Moruya – have been working on the road for the past few months.
The ESC has implemented temporary measures around some damaged bridges and creek crossings in the region and expects those repairs to be completed in the coming months.
The road’s reopening comes on the back of the QPRC being granted $670,000 in NSW Government funding through the Safer Roads Program, money which will go towards further improvements to the sealed section of Araluen Road.
“The funding will allow vegetation clearing, installation of semi-rigid guard rails, vehicle-activated signs, raised reflective pavement markers [cats’ eyes] and other signage, all aimed at improving safety for users of the road,” said the QPRC spokesperson.
Work funded by the state government grant is expected to commence in late 2020.
