The initial concept design for the accessibility upgrades at Queanbeyan Railway Station have been released and Transport NSW is now inviting the community to comment on the proposal.

The proposed works include upgrading the existing paths and kerb ramps at the front of the station, a new accessible car space and taxi-bay, improved toilet amenities and a new pedestrian crossing as people access Henderson Road.

The 134-year-old station was one of nine stations selected for upgrades by Transport NSW after failing to meet federal disability standards.

A Queanbeyan–Palerang Regional Council spokesperson said the council “warmly welcomed” the improvements.

“Council applauds Transport for NSW’s planning for accessibility improvements at the historic Queanbeyan Train Station. Any upgrades that improve access and enhance facilities for some of the most vulnerable in our community is warmly welcomed. We encourage all rail users to view the concept designs that Transport for NSW have put forward and have your say by 24 October,” wrote the spokesperson.

The project is part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program which has seen more than $2.2 billion spent on accessibility upgrades at stations since 2011.

A construction contract will be awarded early next year and works will follow promptly. While original plans estimated a 2023 project completion date, updated plans suggest the station should be finished and open for public use by mid-2022.

To submit your thoughts on the current design, head to the Transport NSW website by Sunday 24 October and fill out the feedback form at the bottom of the page.
