An upgraded Merimbula foreshore is a step closer, with a construction contract officially locked in.
The Merimbula Boardwalk, which runs along the edge of Merimbula Lake from Merimbula Bridge to near Lakewood Drive, was built in 1997.
But the popular attraction has been plagued by high maintenance costs and damage in wild weather.
In late 2025, the Southern Regional Planning Panel (SRPP) gave a unanimous tick of approval to Bega Valley Shire Council’s (BVSC) plans to replace it and carry out major upgrades to the site.
A demolition and construction contract for the works has been awarded to Wagners Pty Ltd.
BVSC project manager Jessica Crawford said it marked an important milestone.
“This is an exciting step forward for one of our region’s most loved attractions.
“Wagners brings proven experience and a strong track record in delivering projects of this scale.
“Their staged program will help minimise disruptions for locals and visitors while ensuring environmental protection for this unique coastal setting.”
It’s hoped the upgrades will enhance accessibility, improve safety and provide an improved visitor experience along the iconic Merimbula foreshore.
According to documents filed with the SRPP, the project will involve rebuilding the entire boardwalk using more resilient materials.
The platform will be widened by 2.5 metres.
Two new lookout platforms will also be created.
Other elements of the works include a compacted screen gravel path with a timber edge to replace the existing path and gravel areas, as well as upgrades to the boardwalk’s signage, lookout platforms, carparks and jetties.
“We look forward to sharing further updates with the community as works progress,” Ms Crawford said.

Member for Bega Doctor Michael Holland welcomed the news, saying the boardwalk is deeply valued by the community.
“The Merimbula Boardwalk and Foreshore Trail is a well-loved attraction, and it’s terrific to see this upgrade moving into the delivery phase,” he said.
“Backed by $8 million in NSW Government funding, this project will improve accessibility and safety while protecting the unique coastal environment that makes Merimbula special. It will ensure locals and visitors of all abilities can continue to enjoy the spectacular Merimbula foreshore for many years to come.”
Construction is expected to start by mid-2026, following confirmation of the final design, component manufacturing and site preparation works.
A timeline given on the council’s website states that the works are expected to be finished by March 2027.
The project is being supported by $2 million from the Australian Government’s Investing in Our Communities Program, as well as $8 million in funding from the NSW Government.
