There’s so much to get up to this week across the regions, with town festivals, live music, special concerts, workshops, art shows and more.

Crank It Up Festival in Batemans Bay is all about great music, dancing and classic cars, bringing back the sights and sounds of the 50s to Batemans Bay’s Foreshore Park.

The South East Centre for Contemporary Art in Bega showcases art inspired by the sea, demonstrating how environment impacts artistic culture in Alick Tipoti’s new exhibition.

Alick Tipoti: Mariw Minaral – Exhibition in Bega

When: 14 to 20 November, during normal gallery hours
Where: South East Centre for Contemporary Art, 1 Zingel Place, Bega

Drawn from the collection of the National Maritime Museum, this exhibition brings together a selection of works by Torres Strait Islander artist Alick Tipoti.

Guided by traditional cultural practices, Tipoti’s artistic storytelling includes cosmology, marine themes and ocean conservation, with art that focuses on what it means to derive one’s culture, livelihood and sense of self from the sea.

The exhibition will feature the artist’s intricate printmaking work as well as sculptural pieces, masks and film.

A new retelling of the classic operetta comes to the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre this week.

Set during COVID days in 2021, this modern spin tells the well-known story of an apprentice who comes of age in the indentured service of a pirate captain and finds that he hasn’t read the fine print and will, in fact, serve his master for the rest of his life. But when he meets the beautiful daughter of a modern Major-General, he finally finds the push he needs to motivate him to leave his life of piracy.

This new version has all the beloved songs along with new, altered dialogue to reflect and reminisce on the COVID era. Don’t miss out on this chance to see an old classic injected with contemporary humour.

Crank It Up Batemans Bay Festival

The Crank It Up Festival transforms Batemans Bay into a retro paradise. Across three days, there will be a whole lot to get excited about with heaps of live music across seven locations, a show ‘n’ shine with classic cars, a street cruise, dance floors and dance workshops so you can pick up some new moves, cruises on the water and awards for the best dressed.

This fun, family-friendly festival celebrates the nostalgia of the 50s, with its iconic music, flashy cars and snazzy outfits.

Sydney Writers’ Festival – The Australian Wars

The Sydney Writers’ Festival streaming service presents The Australian Wars, a new book from filmmaker Rachel Perkins telling the untold story of Australia’s bloody past.

This talk from the author, streamed from Sydney, covers a broad sweep of Australian history. Rather than looking at massacres, guerrilla warfare and battles as singular, isolated events, this book looks at them as a combined story, part of the history of the country, which influenced what Australia would eventually become.

Following the award-winning documentary, this book intends to tell the truth about the country’s history.

Pictures and Popcorn in the Park – Goulburn

When: 15 November, showings at 1, 3, 5 and 7 pm
Where: Belmore Park, 173 Auburn Street, Goulburn
Cost: Free entry.

Head to Belmore Park for Pictures in the Park, a family-friendly event inviting you to check out some classic movies in a beautiful setting.

Four films will play across the day, with a popcorn candy bar selling all the best cinema treats. There will also be free first come, first served bean bags so you can watch the movies in comfort, but feel free to bring a picnic blanket and some cushions in case you don’t snag a bean bag.

The film schedule for this Saturday includes the Pixar classic Monsters Inc. at 1 pm, followed by Cars at 3 pm, Despicable Me at 5 pm and finally, Ten Things I Hate About You at 7 pm.

Botanical Escape – Edible Flower Workshop

Botanical Escape is an afternoon of fun beginning with a welcome drink and a walk through Braidwood to discover hidden treasures and stories in town, which then continues to a botanical deep dive about how to grow edible flowers in your own garden.

The workshops aspect shows attendees how to grow and use their own edible flowers, demonstrating that if you have enough room for a flower bed, you can grow some special things to add to the kitchen or drinks cupboard.

Attendees will enjoy a cupcake decorating session, crafting delicious creations to take home and the day closes with a refreshing botanical mocktail. You will also receive an edible flower guide and a potted edible flower to take home and plant.

Live & Loud featuring Howlin’ Mitch

Live and Loud at the One Tree Inn brings live music to the pub in a big way and this week’s session features Howlin’ Rod Mitchell. Howlin’ Mitch presents a mix of original and classic blues songs, with musical skill, stage presence and heart. Head to the One Tree this Saturday and enjoy the local atmosphere along with some cold drinks and great tunes.

Goulburn Car and Motorcycle Show

When: 16 November, 9 am to 3 pm
Where: One Raceway, 4770 Braidwood Road, Tirrannaville

Goulburn’s Car and Motorcycle Show celebrates anything on wheels, with plenty of classic, custom, modern and rare cars and bikes. Whether you’re looking to appreciate the design of a classic piece of car history, hear the sound of a V8 or just mix with some other gearheads, this is your chance to get out there.

There will be trophies, displays and special surprises on the day, as well as food and coffee.

This hymnal brings together the musical works of 16 contemporary Australian writers to create one stunning musical experience evoking Australian life.

Red Dirt Hymns uses folk songs, country ballads and Australian rock to embody the spirit of the nation, its dirt, saltwater, trees and sand through sound.

The daring voices of the Luminescence Chamber Singers will be performing as well as local youth choirs, electric guitarist Harley Coleman and cellist Freya Schack-Arnott.
