Eurobodalla residents can now prepare to place their junk on the kerb as Eurobodalla Shire Council’s annual hard waste collections begin rolling through the area.
This year the service takes place on Monday 22 July and progressively moves north each week to South Durras where it finishes on 23 September.
The council provides a hard waste collection service once a year for residential properties that use Council’s domestic waste collection services. Households can utilise the hard waste service to get rid of bulky items such as fridges, microwaves, rolls of old carpet, garden tools and furniture.
Nathan Ladmore, Council’s waste services manager, has asked residents not to put out waste too early.
“Last year, we saw a lot of people putting their waste on the kerb well before their area’s collection date,” he said.
“Please don’t jump the gun; items should be put out only a couple of days prior to the commencement of your collection week to keep everyone safe and our neighbourhoods a little tidier. If the weather turns, nobody wants to see their items flying away with the wind,” Mr Ladmore said.
Three collection vehicles visit each street. One truck collects metal for recycling, another truck collects items such as fridges, freezers, and air conditioning units, and a third truck collects everything else.
Residents can help out by dividing junk into three groups – metal items, furniture, and everything else. The items placed on the kerb can’t exceed two cubic metres. If they do, they will not be collected, and it’s the resident’s job to dispose of them. If they don’t, it will be considered illegal dumping.
“Let’s be mindful of what we’re chucking out; have a think of what can be recycled, reused or donated instead.
“Remember, televisions, computers and other electronic items won’t be collected. You can take those to a waste management facility free of charge all year round.”
Other items that won’t be collected and should be taken to a waste facility include:
- Mattresses
- Tyres
- Motor vehicle parts
- Vegetation.
Also, chemicals and hazardous materials such as paint, petrol and oil will not be collected. Residents are encouraged to drop these off for free at the council’s Household Chemical Cleanout collections later in the year, or at the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Surf Beach Waste Management Facility.
