Are you looking for something ‘wheel-y’ fun to do with your friends and family this week? The Moruya community is hosting a special event and you’re invited.
Get ready to roll, as the Summer Beats Block Party is here and taking over the Moruya Skatepark this Friday (13 January) from 10 am to 2 pm.
Enjoy a day full of free live music and entertainment, skateboarding, water fights, food trucks and non-stop fun.
Eurobodalla Shire Council youth development officer Michaela Burtenshaw said the Summer Beats Block Party was the first of its kind.
“The idea of the Block Party is to bring neighbourhoods together and unite the community,” Michaela said.
“It is aimed to the youth, aged 12 to 25, however everyone is welcome, and we encourage them to come down, meet new people, bond and build a sense of connectedness.
“Everything is also completely free too and that was important for us because we wanted to make sure that any young people who might not have money to afford different things in the holidays, still get to have fun and experience eating delicious food and doing really cool activities.”
Michaela said as block parties were popular within communities, the council wanted to hold their own to showcase the vibrant culture present in Moruya.
“For us as youth development officers, we want to highlight the creative expression and amazing talent found within street culture,” she said.
“We want to make the community aware that it does exist and we want to showcase the talents and creativity of our youth and give them a platform to perform and to be seen and heard in a community environment in a positive way.
“We’ve decided to partner up with local organisations and services, as well as incorporate input and ideas from young people in the community too, by showcasing local bands and artists so that they can feel a part of the event.”
The event also aims to connect locals with service providers they may not know exist.
Service providers include 54 reasons, Campbell Page, headspace, PCYC, Karralika, Community Health, The Family Place, Katungal, Red Cross and Marymead.
The youth development officer said there would be plenty of free things to enjoy at the party, including beginner and intermediate skateboarding workshops to be held by Totem Skateboarding, a tie-dye workshop, a live mural will be spray painted, art and craft activities, as well as archery and bubble soccer.
There will also be performances by local bands including Flavuh and Golden Carmichael, a DJ playing tunes throughout the day, free ice cream and snow cones from Whoppa Ice Cream and free tacos with a drink from Mr Salubrious’s Taco Truck.
With more than 150 people expected to attend the event, Michaela said if the event was deemed successful, the council hopes to bring it back to various parts of the Eurobodalla in the future.
Michaela said she looked forward to hosting the Summer Beats Block Party.
“Within my previous role, when I worked in Sydney, I was in a team who ran a block party, and it was one of the funnest days I’ve ever had in my working career, so I wanted to bring that city vibe of block parties down to the coast,” she said.
“My colleagues and I are definitely looking forward to being there and tie-dyeing, trying out all the activities and listening to the local bands perform.
“The Block Party is a great way to escape the school holiday boredom, while connecting community members and supporting young artists and their bands. The event will have a great atmosphere and people will feel a sense of community.”
The event takes place on Friday 13 January, from 10 am at the Moruya Skatepark on Shore Street.
