People have been advised to keep away from the surf and exposed areas along the coastline, with a severe weather warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).
Damaging surf will develop along the South Coast this morning and extend northwards up the east coast by early evening.
It’s all due to a low-pressure system that is expected to deepen over the southern Tasman Sea throughout the day.
“Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf-exposed areas,” the BoM said.
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating and swimming.
A hazardous surf warning is in place for the Batemans and Eden Coasts and is expected to last into Friday (16 December).
NSW Police Force Marine Area Command has advised:
- People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas
- Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf
- Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage
- Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket
- Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan
