The teenager accused of being behind the wheel of a serious crash in Moruya where a 14-year-old boy’s leg was broken has appeared in court for the first time.
Luke Wiggins, 19, appeared in Moruya Local Court on Friday, 14 January, charged over the crash.
NSW Police said a Holden Commodore was allegedly stolen from a home on Vulcan Street, Moruya, before 10:00 pm on 10 August, 2021.
Police allege officers tried to stop the car shortly after this, after seeing it driven in a dangerous way, however the driver did not stop and drove away.
Afterwards, while patrolling the area, police arrived at a single-vehicle crash in Murray Street, Moruya.
The driver, alleged to be the then-18-year-old Mr Wiggins, and his 14-year-old passenger were taken out of the car by members of the public and treated by paramedics.
Police said the 14-year-old had a fractured femur and was taken to Moruya Hospital before being airlifted to hospital in Canberra for more treatment.
A crime scene was established and police began investigating the crash before arresting Mr Wiggins in Moruya on 5 January, 2022.
His charges include dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, driving with a suspended licence, drink-driving, driving while not wearing a seatbelt properly, and driving with an unrestrained person.
On Friday, 14 January, Magistrate Doug Dick varied and continued his bail, which has conditions that include that he live in Watanobbi, which is on the NSW Central Coast, and that he not occupy the driver’s seat of any vehicle.
He has not yet entered pleas and will appear in court again on 18 March, 2022.
