A man faced court today charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the state’s Riverina region at the weekend.
About 6:30 pm on Sunday, 24 May, officers from Riverina Police District were contacted following reports a 10-year-old girl had been sexually abused by a man known to her at a park at Cootamundra.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers, while detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation.
The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
Following inquiries, a 40-year-old man was arrested at a home at Cootamundra about 3:15 pm on Monday, 25 May, and taken to Cootamundra Police Station.
The man was charged with detaining a person with intent to commit a serious indictable offence (kidnapping), an aggravated sexual act, inciting a child to sexually touch and unlawful entry on enclosed lands.
The man was refused bail.
