The National Zoo and Aquarium welcomed its first lion cub in more than two decades earlier this year, and presented her to the public on World Lion Day on 10 August.

Baby Nyra is the first baby lion for the Canberra zoo since 2002, and the first for mum Nairibi and dad Mlinzi.

With a name meaning ‘unity’ in Swahili, Nyra was born on 26 April this year and is already developing a “very sassy” personality, according to Jamala Wildlife Lodge general manager Amanda Mead.

The National Zoo and Aquarium is open 9 am to 5 pm, daily.
