Two occupants from separate yachts participating in the Sydney to Hobart race have died.
About 11:50 pm yesterday (Thursday 26 December 2024), officers from the Marine Area Command were notified by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in Canberra that a crew member on board a yacht had been struck by a sail boom. Fellow crew members performed CPR, but they could not be revived.
The yacht has altered course to Jervis Bay where it was expected to arrive early this morning.
Officers from the Marine Area Command were advised at 2:15 am today (Friday 27 December 2024) that crew members from a second yacht were administering CPR to a colleague who had also been struck by the vessel’s sail boom.
A short time later officers were informed that CPR had been unsuccessful.
The police vessel “Nemesis” is escorting the second yacht to Batemans Bay.
No further information is available at this stage, however the region has been subject to wild winds over the past 24 hours and there is speculation that may have played a part.
The Bureau of Meteorology had a strong wind warning in place overnight, with wind speeds around 25–30 knots between Sydney and Ulladulla and waves about two to three metres high in some areas.
