Multiple casualties, including children, remain in hospital after a horror crash that left a six-year-old boy dead.
NSW Police previously said emergency services were called to Towamba Road on the Far South Coast at about 4:10 pm on Tuesday afternoon (13 May), after a dual-cab ute and truck collided.
A six-year-old boy, who had been travelling in the ute, had died at the scene of the crash.
The ute driver (a man in his 30s), along with two other child passengers, suffered injuries and were airlifted to hospital.
Police have now said the driver was airlifted to Canberra Hospital, while the two children were airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
The truck driver was taken to Bega Hospital for mandatory testing and to be treated for shock.
On Wednesday (14 May), Traffic and Highway Patrol Crash Investigation Unit Detective Inspector Jason Hogan said it was “a terrible tragedy”.
“All the patients from the ute remain in hospital, and the truck driver has been released from hospital,” he said.
He said the girls, aged two and eight, were in a serious but stable condition.
The crash scene has been examined by officers attached to the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit.
Detective Inspector Hogan said officers were investigating various elements around the crash.
Towamba Road is a thoroughfare through the state forest and the crash occurred at Nullica (about 10 km southwest of Eden).
“We’ve got nothing to suggest that the road conditions, at this stage, were dangerous,” he said.
“All those inquiries will form part of our investigation.”
Detective Inspector Hogan urged drivers to be careful when on the road.
“They need to drive to the conditions, obey the road rules and make sure that they get themselves and their passengers home safely,” he said.
As police inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
