Bonnie Tyler said it best with her 1984 hit ‘Holding Out for a Hero’.

“I need a hero,” Bonnie sings.

“I’m holding out for a hero ’til the end of the night
“He’s gotta be strong and he’s gotta be fast
“And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight
“I need a hero,” she sings

Eurobodalla locals have until this Friday to nominate their version of heroism for Eurobodalla Shire Council’s ‘Local Hero Awards’.

Introduced last year, the Local Hero Awards aim to recognise Eurobodalla men and women who make outstanding contributions to the community.

While it’s fair to suggest Bonnie Tyler is looking for love, Council’s awards have a wider scope. Nominees might have provided outstanding service in any field – sports, community service, health, education, arts, the environment.

They may be responsible for individual acts of compassion, generosity, bravery, ingenuity, or have had exceptional professional accomplishments.

Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes says Council wants to recognise Eurobodalla’s unsung heroes and celebrate all they give to the community.

“These awards are about giving recognition to the many people who give up their own time for the benefit of others and for our community as a whole,” she says.

“Each year we call for nominations in the lead up to National Volunteers Week, during which the winners are announced at a ceremony held in the beautiful Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden.

“Nominating someone is easy and quick, you can do it online via Council’s website, by sending an email, or for those who don’t have the internet they can give Council a call on 4474 1358.”

Broulee’s Lindsay Boyton was named the Eurobodalla’s first Local Hero in 2018.

Heavily involved in various community groups, Mr Boyton was described as the “go-to man” for everything, from applying for government grants and setting up websites and social media to being handy on the tools and baking the “the best” apple turnovers.

Just like Bonnie Tyler, Council is “Holding out for a hero ’til the end of the night” nominations close Friday, May 3.
