A Telstra base station in the southeast NSW town of Candelo is back online after it was significantly damaged in an act of vandalism earlier this year.

At the time, Telstra said the mobile base station had been “significantly damaged”, affecting mobile services for customers in and around the area.

A photo of the scene showed a tower that had fallen over and was resting on the ground.

But on Monday (16 September), Telstra regional general manager Chris Taylor said his team had completed works to rebuild the site, restoring mobile coverage for customers and bolstering capacity.

He said the vandalism caused “significant infrastructure damage” and impacted mobile services for customers.

“While we had a temporary solution in place, the completion of the new site will mean a better mobile experience for customers,” Mr Taylor said.

“As part of the works to rebuild the site, we took the opportunity to double the 4G capacity, which means customers should notice faster data speeds and reduced congestion.

“Due to the severity of the damage to the original site, the rebuild took a little longer than we’d hoped, and we thank everyone for their patience.”

He said landline, nbn and other broadband services weren’t impacted.

“We continue to work with police to investigate what happened and encourage anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area to contact Crime Stoppers,” Mr Taylor said.

A spokesperson for NSW Police did not have an update on the matter to provide on Monday.

“Police were notified of damage to a telecommunications tower servicing the Candelo area on Friday, 26 April, 2024,” a police spokesperson said earlier this year.

“Officers attached to South Coast Police District attended and commenced an investigation.”

Police urged anyone with information about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000.
