The NSW Government will reduce the speed limit on a road south of Marulan in an attempt to improve safety for motorists.

The change will take place to about 7.5 km of Marulan South Road, from south of the roundabout on the Hume Highway at Marulan to the end of the road at Boral Lime Works.

The speed limit for this stretch of the road will be dropped from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.

It is expected the change will result in a travel time increase of about one minute and 15 seconds.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the speed zone was reviewed in consultation with NSW Police and the Goulburn-Mulwaree Council and in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Standard.

The spokesperson also said the speed limit was reduced to improve safety on the road in response to request from council, residents and local businesses.

“It was found the reduced speed limit was necessary due to the increased use of heavy vehicles, the narrow width and access to and from businesses, farms and residential properties,” they said.

The spokesperson said factors considered when reviewing speed settings included crash history and the presence of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicycle riders.

Other factors were road function and use, roadside development, road characteristics and traffic mix.

“Streets are not just about moving people and goods – they also interact with places where people live, work and spend time. All of these aspects are considered when setting new speed limits,” the spokesperson said.

“Speed limits are set to ensure motorists travel at a safe and appropriate speed for the surrounding road environment, and to allow time for drivers travelling at the limit to detect a hazard and react quickly enough to brake or take evasive action.”

The reduced speed limit will come into effect next week, and updated signage will be installed.

In June the State Government reduced the speed limits on roads around Marulan and Towrang, north of Goulburn, to improve safety for motorists in the region. Sections of Towrang, Brayton, Ambrose and Red Hills roads were reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h.

As part of this move, Transport for NSW also halved the speed limit along Merino, Dorsett, Suffolk, Leicester and Southdown roads as well as Corriedale Drive and Herdwick Place, which are all outside Marulan.

Last month Transport for NSW changed the speed limits to roads across the Bega Valley at Kameruka, Bemboka, Candelo and Wolumla.
