The Eurobodalla’s most promising young writers have received applause with the winners of the 2019 Mayor’s Writing Competition announced.
And exclusive to the About Regional community we have the winning story for you to enjoy.
Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes presented each of the finalists with a certificate and an anthology of the students’ stories, before awarding overall winner Rosie McPartland with the Syd Hayes Creative Writing Award.
Rosie received an exquisitely handcrafted pen presented in a beautiful case made by local craftsman Richard Turley out of Moruya River Swamp Sheoak.
Now in its eleventh year, the Mayor’s Writing Competition was initiated by the late Cr Fergus Thomson. In that time students have submitted more than 2,500 entries.
To acknowledge Rosie’s achievement in 2019, the Perpetual Shield, donated by the Eurobodalla Fellowship of Australian Writers will be displayed at St Peter’s Anglican College.
2019 Eurobodalla Mayor’s Writing Competition finalist:
5-6 years – Sophia Pincott, Jordan Hatcher, Liliana Murphy and Poppy Mitchell.
7-9 years – Maison Heane, Adam Wellington, Rosie McPartland and Daisy West.
10-12 years – Matthew Denys, Iona Kelly, Zahlia Kelly and Illia MacLachlan.
13-15 years – Jake Brogan, Leila Patyus, Huon Dufield, Emma Moses and Grace Reid.
16-18 years – Ryan Hall, Hugh Tuckwell, Jye Cook and Ashley MacKinnon.
And the winner is…

That little girl and her brother are walking this way. No, no, no, don’t pick me!
It is such a beautiful day the grass is so luscious and green and thick. The sun is shining so bright even though it’s late in the day. Now it is cooling down, but before it was 33 degrees, even I think that is hot.
I can smell some pollen I bet the bees would be loving that.
She is still walking towards me. Oh no she picked me up, she is blowing me; aaaaaahhhhhh the wind is so strong.
Where is it taking me, watch out for that tree.
All night I fly around in the wind. I am glad it is a new day.
Hey look at that big lake it’s so sparkly and blue, I can even see some fish and ducks.
Now I am flying over a field and I can see some sheep, lambs and cows. The lambs look like they are having fun chasing each other.
I’m going up again, higher and higher.
What’s all that noise? I think it must be a school I can see a lot of children playing on the playground.
Look I am heading to the beach. I can see so many surfers and life savers. Lucky it’s a warm day. If I was a kid, I would definitely do nippers at Broulee.
The wind is changing and I’m heading away from the beach. As beautiful as the beach maybe I don’t think the salt water of the ocean is the place for me.
There are hippy dudes skating, they think they’re so cool!
What’s that big shed below me? Oh, it’s a fire station. Last year they put out a fire that saved me and all my friends.
The wind is slowing down now and I feel like I’m floating down.
Wow, look at all those dandelions that looks like a good home for me. Here I come; I’m coming into land. BUMP!
Oh, how rude of me I forgot to introduce myself. I am Dandy the dandelion seed and this feels like a nice home for me to be with all of my friends.
All I need now is a little bit of rain.
