A festival designed to celebrate seniors in the community with over 350 events across metro and regional NSW has officially commenced.
Funded by the NSW Government’s Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program, the NSW Seniors Festival is the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere.
It kicks off today (6 February) and runs to Sunday (12 February) across Goulburn and the Bega Valley with a variety of events for all seniors who want to participate in fun activities, make new friends and celebrate the best things the region has to offer.
“The festival is a way for the community to acknowledge the remarkable contributions seniors make to our region,” Goulburn Mulwaree Council neighbourhood aid coordinator Kim Sorensen said.
“It also gives us an opportunity to showcase what we have to offer and provides exciting events for seniors to participate in.”
Taking place in Goulburn from 6 to 10 February, and in the Bega Valley from 6 to 12 February, the events include music events, fitness and strengthening workshops, knitting classes, book launches, crafternoons, tech help workshops and more.
The Seniors Festival will be celebrated in Goulburn with:
- A Special Entertainment event and a luncheon on Tuesday (7 February) from 10:30 am
- A Seniors Rights Talk on Wednesday (8 February), from 11 am to 2 pm
- An On the Road 65 Plus, Staying Independent and Safe seminar on Thursday (9 February), from 10 am to 12 pm
- A Keith Potger concert at the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre on Friday (10 February), from 10 am to 12 pm

The Bega Valley Shire Library is also offering several events to celebrate seniors in NSW for 2023.
These include the book launch of Fascinating Bega: The Anatomy Of A Town, 1851-2023 at the Bega Library and the Words and Music program at the Eden Library, which will be held on Friday (10 February), and the Introduction to Saltwater Fly-tying workshop, which is set to be held at Bermagui Library on Saturday (11 February).
Bega Valley Shire Library officer Kerryn Wood said the library staff were excited to offer a variety of fun, informative and specially tailored programs to Bega Valley senior citizens during the 2023 Seniors Festival.
“The Words and Music event brings people together to share discussion on a specially selected book, followed by morning tea and live music,” Ms Wood said.
“The fly-tying session is perfect for saltwater fishing enthusiasts or first-timers wanting to learn the art of fly-tying.
“No experience is necessary and all materials are supplied.”
Ms Wood said the Eden Library would also run The Art of Imperfection, a workshop that explores the concept of ‘wabi-sabi’.
“Wabi-sabi is the Japanese concept of searching for the beauty in imperfection and accepting the more natural cycle of life,” she said.
“It reminds us that all things, including us and life itself, are impermanent, incomplete and imperfect.”
After the Seniors Festival, many programs will continue to run across libraries in the Bega Valley Shire and Goulburn.
