31 DECEMBER, 12:30 pm: The search for missing hiker Hadi Nazari continues for a sixth day in the Kosciuszko National Park after he became separated from friends on Boxing Day.
Riverina Police District Acting Superintendent Jill Gibson said they had brought in additional volunteers to aid in the search through some of the most rugged terrain in NSW.
“We’re currently still searching the areas, utilizing specialist resources, including specially trained bushwalkers, volunteers from VRA and SES who we’ve airlifted into rugged and remote areas to try and increase our capability to search those areas,” she said.
“Yesterday, we airlifted 28 volunteers into a higher capacity area … taking them 1600 metres above where the current command post is, and then they’ve worked their way down in a grid pattern.
“The volunteers we do have are amazing. They are specially trained for this type of terrain. It’s not just like going on a walk up a hill, it’s dense bush land with high altitude and scaling it is very difficult.”
Hadi Nazari, who turns 24 today (Tuesday 31 December), has not been seen since descending the Hannels Spur Trail at Geehi, between Khancoban and Thredbo, on Thursday.
When he failed to rejoin friends at the Geehi campground a multi-agency search was launched.
“At this point we’ve had no indications of where he is, apart from the last known sighting,” said Ms Gibson.
“He did not have a beacon with him at the time that we’re aware of, and none has been activated in the area.
“The camping gear which he had shows that we had a resonable amount of water. He had camping tent, poles and adequate clothing and that increases our hopes.”
31 DECEMBER: Police have released the name of a man who has been the subject of a multi-agency search since he went missing on Thursday (26 December 2024).
Hadi Nazari, 23, was last seen by friends about 2:30 pm that day, descending the Hannels Spur Trail, Geehi, between Khancoban and Thredbo, in the Koscuiszko National Park.
Hadi is described as being Asian in appearance, slim build and around 172 cm tall. He was wearing a grey, long sleeve shirt, grey pants and carrying a blue backpack.
The search is continuing.
30 DECEMBER: A multi-agency search has resumed today for a bushwalker missing in the Koscuiszko National Park.
Police have been told the 23-year-old man was last seen by friends about 2:30 pm on Thursday (26 December 2024), descending the Hannels Spur Trail, Geehi, between Khancoban and Thredbo, in the Koscuiszko National Park.
The three men were expected to meet up at the Geehi campground; however, when the 23-year-old failed to arrive, the two friends, aged 23 and 24, began to search for him.
Officers attached to the Riverina Police District were alerted about 8:45 pm, and commenced patrols by vehicle and on foot, assisted by the SES, but without success.
The following day (Friday 27 December 2024), a command post was established and a multi-agency search commenced involving Goulburn Police Rescue, officers attached to Riverina Police District, assisted by National Parks and Wildlife Service, SES, NSW Ambulance, VRA and POLAir.
Further assets have been deployed during the three-day land and air search – including a helicopter with infra-red capabilities – to try to locate the missing bushwalker without success.
While there are concerns for the man’s welfare, police have been told the man is an experienced hiker and is carrying camping equipment and wearing clothing suitable to the conditions.
