May Street in Eastgrove, Goulburn, will be closed from the end of this month, with signage and traffic diversion guiding all traffic via nearby Park Road while contractors begin work on the replacement of the street’s bridge.
The current single-lane bridge will be replaced with two lanes and a pedestrian walkway, and will be constructed by SD Group, which won the tender in March. The new bridge will also be half a metre higher than the current one to improve flood vulnerability and avoid creating an upstream impact during flooding.
The project is marked for completion in mid-November this year, and will commence with the relocation of electricity services, during which there will be some disruptions to electricity supply, although details of this are not yet available for local residents.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is funding the new kerb and footpath along May Street, which complement the bridge replacement with 500m of footpath and 700m of kerb and guttering, and that work is expected to be complete this financial year.
“I’m sure the residents of Eastgrove will be very pleased to see this replacement project underway,” said Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Bob Kirk. “It will mean this exit is more likely to be usable during a flooding event, and the bridge will also be a great improvement on the current one which has a 16-tonne load limit and a 20km/h speed restriction.”
Replacement of the May Street bridge will cost $1.15 million, with $150,000 of this funding coming from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
