The October Long Weekend heralds the approach of warmer weather. Summer is on its way with cossies at the ready and camping spots being considered.
The annual Reboot in Bermagui signals a start to that new energy with a jam-packed two-day program of fun and fitness that the entire town takes part in.
Reboot in Bermagui is all about launching into spring and springing in to health.
Bermagui real estate agent Julie Rutherford says the town’s business chamber was looking for an event to really kick off the season and get people into ‘Bermi’ for the weekend.
“We have such a beautiful environment, the ocean, rivers, tracks, headland and loads of people with expertise, I thought – how about an event that showcases all of that? We started six years ago with no sponsorship and then in 2015 and 2016 we had businesses approaching us!”
There are over 30 events packed into this weekend’s program, and people do the lot from SUP lessons, yoga and pilates classes, surfing, barefoot bowls, a sound bath, and fun runs and ocean swims.
Julie says it’s a chance for young people to see their parents and grandparents out there having a go, “young kids see their grandma out on a SUP board and they might think it’s funny but they also think it’s great.”
The ‘Tug O War’ team battle is definitely one of the highlights of the weekend.
Held on the lawn out the front of the Bermagui Beach Hotel, the event awards $200 cash to the winning team, and a perpetual trophy.
“It’s such good fun,” Julie says.

The weekend also inspires people to get off the couch and into action. “Each year there is a running group called ‘Couch to 5ks’,” Julie says.
“Couch to 5ks starts 8 weeks out from the Reboot weekend, with simple and safe training two days a week beginning with walking.
“There are around 6 participants in ‘Couch to 5k’ each year, and every one of them is still running, in fact some have gone on to run half-marathons, so committing to the Reboot can really help you on your road to fitness.”
Kicking off the week-end program on Saturday morning are the professionally timed fun runs. There are three different runs with a new 5km route this year, the ‘No Hills 5km’ and there’s also a ‘No Adults 1.5km’ for the kids.
Other ReBoot activities include the Kids Scoot and Skate competition, healthy cooking demos from Kelly at Eastwoods, ‘stress-less’ sessions, barefoot bowls, croquet and more.
On Sunday (October 6), the fun kicks off at Bermagui Surf Club with the two ocean swim events.
At 9 am there’s a 300 to 400 metre swim across beautiful Horseshoe Bay. Then the ‘Swim Run Swim’ at 9.15, approximately a 700 metre swim with a 100 metre run in between, with water safety by the fabulous Bermagui Life Savers.
Sunday breakfast is included in your entry fee and served between 8 am and 11 am at the Surf Club.
Following the swim, the champion ReBoot male and female will be awarded the prestigious ReBooter and ReBootie of the event which includes trophies and cash prizes.
Later on Sunday afternoon, grab your clubs (or rent some) and head to Bermagui Country Club for the 9 hole ReBoot Ambrose golf competition, a four person, mixed-team event just after lunch.
Julie says it’s gratifying seeing so many people out, running, training, posting pics online, “it’s a really great weekend and I love being involved, as do all the other helpers and volunteers.”
Reboot is a not-for-profit event so everything goes back into the community by way of prizes and vouchers.
