A dramatic police pursuit across roads in the Bega Valley and Monaro has resulted in a man being charged with a range of offences.
The saga starts at about 12.20 pm yesterday (June 19), when officers from Bega Highway Patrol were travelling east on Snowy Mountains Highway at Morans Crossing, west of Bega when they saw a vehicle allegedly travelling in excess of 140km/h.
Officers indicated for the vehicle’s driver to stop. When the driver did not stop a pursuit was initiated but was terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
At about 2.40 pm the vehicle was seen by police travelling north along the Monaro Highway near Bombala. The pursuit was resumed then again terminated.
Just before 3:00 pm police received information that the vehicle had travelled through Nimmitabel in a westerly direction.
The police report says, “road spikes were deployed at Rock Creek on the Monaro Highway and the man was arrested shortly after.”
“The 23-year-old man, from Benandarah (northwest of Batemans Bay) was taken to Cooma District Hospital for blood and urine samples and a health assessment. He was released from hospital and taken to Cooma Police Station.
“The man was charged with three counts of police pursuit – drive dangerously, possess prohibited drug, and licence and registration offences. The man was also charged with two outstanding warrants relating to robbery and failing to comply with corrections order,” police report.
The man was refused bail to appear at Cooma Local Court today.
