ACT Policing has recovered more than 1000 stolen mail items from the ACT and as far away as Batemans Bay after arresting two people in Lawson.

A 29-year-old man and 16-year-old woman will each face 23 counts of mail theft and further charges are expected to be laid.

The arrests came on Sunday (29 May), after police received calls regarding people allegedly attempting to break into mailboxes at homes in Lawson at about 7 am.

Soon after, police attended Stockman Avenue, Lawson and observed two people who matched the description provided by witnesses.

The duo ran from police. They were chased on foot, caught and arrested. A nearby vehicle was identified as being linked to them.

Police could see further items inside the vehicle possibly linked to other offences so it was seized and held while a search warrant was obtained.

Yesterday (31 May) the search warrant was executed on the vehicle and more than 1000 items of mail were recovered including items addressed to locations in the ACT, Batemans Bay and other NSW locations.

They have each been charged with 23 counts of mail theft with further charges expected to be laid.

A police spokesperson thanked the public for the tip off.

“The community are the eyes and ears when it comes to many offences and, with instances like this, it makes it easier to bring the perpetrators before court,” the spokesperson said.
