Parking has been the recent major bone of contention over the new Bungendore High School, but now an alternative has been proposed by the NSW Government.
“Now having reached agreement with the numerous government departments involved in delivering this, I can confirm the proposed area is the southern corner of the Bungendore Railway Station,” Monaro MP Nichole Overall announced.
“As it’s directly across the road from the primary school, the temporary setting for the high school, this creates more parking and easier accessibility.”
The location had also been proposed by Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council in one of its original submissions regarding the project.
Ms Overall said the departments of school infrastructure and transport were now in discussions over how to ensure the works for the carpark were undertaken safely and in accordance with all necessary requirements.
“Once everything is approved and in order, installation is anticipated to take around two weeks,” she said.
“The focus remains to do all possible to be ready for the start of the 2023 school year.”
Additional parking along Turallo Terrace for the education precinct was also provided as part of the revised design for the new high school, which were objected to by the QPRC councillors.
“This position by council is difficult to understand given residents’ calls for more parking not less,” Ms Overall said.
“My focus and that of the NSW Government is to deliver what the community has expressly requested.”
Another revised plan has seen the provision of further carparking spaces in the Turallo Terrace area.
A project update from School Infrastructure noted the changes to the parking in and around the school, as well as utility arrangements within the school site.
Design changes include:
- an increase in on-site parking from 44 to 56 spaces
- perpendicular parking on the southern side of Turallo Terrace replaced with 22 parallel spaces
- perpendicular parking on the northern side of Turallo Terrace that front private residences removed, with 19 perpendicular parking spaces retained adjacent to Bungendore Preschool
- provision of 11 drop-off/pick-up spaces on the western side of Majara Street outside the primary school to replace and extend the existing five drop-off/pick-up spaces currently on the south side of Gibraltar Street. This brings the total number of drop-off/pick-up spaces to 21
- the waste enclosure in the carpark has been shifted towards the centre of the carpark
- minor changes made to utilities infrastructure, including proposed kiosk substation shifted to a location outside of proposed water and sewer easements, and gas meter, water meter and fire hydrant booster shifted to the west of the entry forecourt to reflect relocation of substation and to comply with authority requirements
The main school buildings and teaching and learning spaces have not changed since the design was last shared in September.
