A man has died following a helicopter crash in the western Riverina.
Just before midday on Friday (22 November), emergency services were called to Corrong Road, One Tree west of Hay, following reports of a helicopter crash.
In a statement, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said that they received an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) distress beacon signal at around 10 am from a “US-registered Super Puma helicopter with people two on board, on a ferry flight from Broken Hill to Albury in New South Wales”.
The Super Puma is a medium-sized, four-bladed, twin-engined utility helicopter that is widely used by civil authorities and the military as well as for private transport.
An air ambulance was dispatched from Bendigo to assist other local vehicles and aircraft in the search for the helicopter.
Murrumbidgee Police confirmed on Friday afternoon that a male passenger in his 40s was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
The 39-year-old pilot was also treated for minor injuries before being taken to Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
A crime scene has been established by officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District and an investigation into the cause of the crash will be undertaken by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
