Goulburn’s Convoy for Kids may have been scaled back this year due to COVID-19 restrictions in the lead-up to the event, but the Mystery Drive still raised an impressive $30,000 to help sick kids in the local area.
Almost 100 trucks took part in the 150-kilometre drive around the Goulburn region, and the community braved the rain to join the truckers for a barbecue at Divalls Quarry on 14 November.
C4K President Colin Imms said the day and the final fundraising tally was a great result.
“Even though it was a smaller event compared to normal, we had a fantastic day,” he said.
“Despite COVID-19, we very much wanted to still run an event and, because it has been such a long and hard year for so many people, we thought this would provide a bit of normality for everyone.
“It is fantastic to receive this level of support from the trucking and local community – without it, we couldn’t continue to operate.”
The lead truck position auction for the Mystery Drive was won by Warwick Burrows, with his son Mark driving the truck.
A raffle and online auctions helped boost the coffers, with money going directly to local children with cancer and other terminal illnesses, as well as those with permanent disabilities.
“Thanks to the generosity of the trucking and local community, it was our major fundraising event of the year and in the circumstances faced by all at this time, we were very happy with the result,” Mr Imms added.
The C4K committee is planning a bigger and better event for November 2022, with more details to be announced early next year.
“We will be attempting a Guinness World Record for the number of trucks registered in our convoy,” Mr Imms said.
He says the community will be invited to take part in a big carnival day featuring a “very high profile children’s act from a popular TV show” as well as a concert with a mix of local and interstate acts.
The C4K committee has a core group of around 15 to 20 volunteers and with a huge event planned for next year, Mr Imms says more helpers are needed.
“We need more volunteers to really achieve what we want to achieve, that is increasing the level of support we can offer kids in our community who really need it,” he said.
“I find being a part of C4K Goulburn to be a very rewarding experience and would welcome others to join.”
