An infusion of state government funding is set to make roads safer in the Hilltops, Cootamundra-Gundagai, Weddin and Bland local government areas.

Safety barriers, rumble strips and road shoulders are some of the measures geared to keep motorists safe with $3,114,959 allocated for five projects.

The largest portion of funding, $1.06 million, will allow Bland Shire Council to install barriers, a profile edge line, undertake road marking and other safety measures at an accident hotspot on the southern approaches to Ungarie.

A further $832,354 will fund an upgrade of the Belmore and Gundagai Roads intersection from give way to stop and see the construction of a pedestrian refuge.

Several sites along the Back Demondrille Road to Harden will benefit from $510,300 for sealed shoulder improvements and installation of new curve and advisory speed signs.

Curve alignment markers, barriers and an improved seal shoulder has seen $462,305 earmarked for a three kilometre stretch of Henry Lawson Way.

The Olympic Highway that runs through Cootamundra, Young and up to Cowra will also receive an additional $400,000.

For residents of Young, a $250,000 roundabout is planned for the notorious Berthong and Wombat Streets intersection, the scene of several accidents in the past decade.

Making the announcement, Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said she spends half her life travelling the Cootamundra electorate roads.

“I know first-hand how dangerous some of them can be,” Ms Cooke said.

“That’s why we’re investing in life-saving measures across our road network to see that every motorist who sets off on a journey makes it home.”
