Police have charged a Nowra man over a single vehicle crash that left three passengers dead at Tarago, about 40 km south of Goulburn, earlier this week.

About 1:10 pm on Sunday 28 July 2024, emergency services were called to the intersection of Bungendore and Collector Roads at Tarago after reports a vehicle had left the road and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.

A NSW Police spokesperson said officers attached to The Hume Police District and other emergency services attended and found three passengers – a man aged 20, and two women aged 18 and 20 – dead at the scene.

We suspend licences – quite rightly – to protect others, yet all too often we read reports like this. Three young innocent lives snuffed-out. What is being done to actually enforce these suspensions? What CAN be done, in practical terms? I can’t think of anything, apart from house arrest and ankle monitors. And even then… Should not the law [judiciary, police] put its mind to this? Hopefully without misguided inputs from well-meaning but misguided civil libertarians: they have no role here beyond stressing the terminal encroachment on the victims’ a priori civil liberties. As it stands, suspension of someone’s driving privileges – and they ARE privileges – is meaningless. Comments from police, magistrates, legal professionals etc. would be most welcome.
