We’ve made it – here’s to a long weekend! Our list of nine things to keep you busy contains chances to feed your stomach, nourish your soul, inspire your creativity and get you out an about. Let’s get into them …

Multiple days

The Boy from Oz is the most successful Australian musical and the first to make it to Broadway – and now it’s coming to Canberra. Image: Free Rain Theatre Company.

The Boy from Oz

When: 1 to 20 October, shows at various times
Where: Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre (The Q), 253 Crawford St, Queanbeyan
Cost: Tickets cost between $52 and $70 and are available via the performing arts centre’s website.

The Boy from Oz is the first Australian musical to make it to Broadway, but now it’s really hitting the big stage at the magnificent Q in Queanbeyan! The show is a musical biography of Peter Allen, who was born in 1944 in Tenterfield. He made his entertainment debut at the age of five as an Al Jolson impersonator. His teenage years saw him become a pop star, tour Asia, work with Judy Garland and marry Liza.

Throughout his career, he would become known for his energetic performances and lavish costumes and songwriting (I Honestly Love You, (Arthur’s Theme) The Best That You Can Do, I Still Call Australia Home and I Go to Rio). The show’s music and lyrics are by Peter Allen and the book by Nick Enright. The Boy from Oz also features haze, adult themes and infrequent coarse language.

Three lemurs

Junior and Kindy Zookeeper for a Day

When: 10 October, 9 am to noon (kindy program); 8 October, 9 am to 3 pm (junior program)
Where: Mogo Wildlife Park, 222 Tomakin Road, Mogo
Cost: Tickets for the kindy program and the junior program are available via the zoo’s website.

Stop by Mogo these school holidays and take a behind-the-scenes look at what zookeepers do. The zoo is running sessions for young kids to try their hand at looking after the animals. They will also take home a printed photo, zookeeper cap and other souvenirs to help them remember the day.

The Kindy Zookeeper program is aimed at kids aged five to seven (a parent will also need to come along), and the Junior Zookeeper is for kids aged eight to 11. A qualified zookeeper supervises both programs.

Irish Woolfest Boorowa

Where: Various locations; see program
Cost: Depends on event; see program.

It’s all things sheep at the Woolfest. The craic starts unofficially on Friday, before things pick up on the following day. On Sunday, the Blessing of the Fleece and street parade will kick off at 11:45 am. Across the festival, attendees can enjoy art shows, barefoot bowls, a quick-shear competition, live music, antique engine and tractor displays, working dog trials, Irish dancers, woodchoppers and more. This festival is a celebration of Boorowa’s history – with a dash of Irish charm.

Bega Rotary Book Fair

When: 4 to 5 October, 9 am to 5 pm
Where: Bega Valley Public School, 27 Auckland Street, Bega

Bega Rotary Book Fair is returning to the Far South Coast for a two-day sale – in the lead-up to the long weekend, the Rotary Club of Bega has been sorting through their collection of fiction and children’s books.

Due to size constraints, there will be no reference books available and no donations can be accepted on the day. The book fair is the club’s main fundraising event, with the proceeds being put back into the club’s charitable works. Stop by the school, bring an empty bag (or two) and stock up on some picks for your summer reading!

‘Gold’ Was the Cry launch

When: 10 October, from 6:30 pm
Where: Bermagui Country Club, Tuross Street, Bermagui
Cost: Free entry.

When gold was discovered at Montreal Goldfield by Canadian Henry Williams in September 1880, it triggered a gold rush. A documentary of the area’s trials and tribulations over the coming decades, ‘Gold’ Was the Cry traces how the goldfields shaped the region – its stories include the significance of nearby Mount Gulaga to the Yuin people, the disappearance of five people in 1880 and contemporary tours of the site.

The 40-minute film was made by international producer and Far South Coast resident Hiromi Matsuoka, and features some famous faces from Montreal Goldfield, as well as sketches by famous gold rush artist S T Gill and photographs by Tilba’s William Corkhill.

Cirque Africa

When: 10 October, 7:30 to 9:30 pm
Where: Goulburn Performing Arts Centre, 163 Auburn Street, Goulburn
Cost: Tickets cost between $79.90 and $89.90, and are available via the performing arts centre.

Cirque Africa is set to bring elements from the diverse cultures living across the continent, performed by a handpicked and world-renowned troupe. The show is produced and directed by ‘Papa Africa’ (also known as Winston Ruddle), and features acrobats, dancers, musicians and contortionists in a breathtaking show of African cultures.
