The $8 million replacement of Merimbula’s iconic Boardwalk and Foreshore Path will include fishing platforms, lighting, seating and swimming areas.

With sections of the ageing timber boardwalk collapsing, work will begin this year thanks to funding from the second round of the State Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole joined Bega Valley Mayor and Liberal candidate for Bega Russell Fitzpatrick in Merimbula on Sunday to announce the grant that will help transform the boardwalk and foreshore into a nature-based experience.

“The Regional Tourism Activation Fund is upgrading iconic attractions to support accessibility and tourism in regional towns,” Mr Toole said.

“This investment in regional communities across NSW, such as Merimbula, will boost economic and employment opportunities.

“The multimillion-dollar investment in Merimbula’s Boardwalk and Foreshore Path will include a fishing platform and swimming access, allowing locals and visitors to enjoy the great outdoors while they walk around the beautiful Merimbula Lake.”

The new boardwalk will be wider and provide better access and stability for users and allow two wheelchairs, prams or people walking dogs to pass more easily.

Bega Valley Council CEO Anthony McMahon said the upgrade was a brilliant outcome for the region.

“Our council has been working closely with the NSW Government and community on this project for a number of years, and we are thrilled to see our plans come to life,” Mr McMahon said.

“Nature-based tourism that is accessible for everyone improves leisure and recreation opportunities and is key to attracting visitors to our unique region.”

The boardwalk runs from the bridge for 3.4 kilometres along the northern side of the lake.

The Regional Tourism Activation Fund supports projects that are diverse and inclusive, ensuring visitors to regional NSW have unforgettable experiences that will keep people coming back.

The $180m Regional Tourism Activation Fund is part of the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s $3.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies, and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities.
