Man drowns at South Bombo Beach

A man has drowned near Kiama during a Boxing Day swim.

Shortly before 5 pm yesterday (Thursday 26 December 2024), emergency services responded to reports that members of the public were performing CPR on a man who had been pulled from the surf at South Bombo Beach, near Kiama.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District also assisted in CPR efforts until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, the 52-year-old man could not be revived, and he died at the scene.

Police have been told the man was swimming in the surf with an 18-year-old male relative when they became caught in a rip.

Several members of the public entered the surf and removed the pair from the water.

The 18-year-old man was uninjured.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
