A 46-year-old man has died after being found unresponsive near Picnic Point on a bank of the Wapengo Creek, Tanja, late yesterday afternoon (Monday 25 April).
Police were told the man had gone swimming in the creek shortly before 4 pm and when he could not be found, witnesses called emergency services and began to look for him.
Witnesses found and assisted the man a short time before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and attempted to revive the man.
However, he died at the scene.
South Coast Police District officers, SES and Fire and Rescue NSW teams attended to recover the man’s body.
Inquiries into the incident continue while a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Surf Life Saving members were also involved with communication efforts.
“Communications in the inlet are difficult, as there’s no mobile service a lot of the time,” Far South Coast Surf Life Saving director Cheryl McCarthy said.
The inlet is not patrolled.
Anzac Day (25 April) marked the end of regular Surf Life Saving patrols, with those still taking to the water urged to stay vigilant.
“Be mindful the ocean is always unpredictable,” Ms McCarthy said.
“If you’re in doubt, don’t go out.”
All Far South Coast Surf Life Saving clubs have emergency call-out capabilities seven days a week and have jet skis and drones to help with emergencies.
Flags will be back up on beaches on the October long weekend.
