A Canberra man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with the murder of a 44-year-old man who died following a fight at the Kingston Hotel on Sunday night (5 July).
Police arrested a 35-year-old Griffith man yesterday at about 1:20 pm (9 July) in the city area of Canberra.
The arrest follows the naming of the dead man as Warren Hordpenko from Dalmeny, near Narooma. He died at the scene a short time after the altercation.
Police attended the hotel at about 9.15 pm following reports of a disturbance at the location to find ACT Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene treating an injured 44-year-old man.
Police will allege that on Sunday night at about 8:58 pm, the defendant entered the hotel and assaulted Mr Hordpenko.
Detective Acting Superintendent Matt Reynolds confirmed that no weapon or glass was involved during the altercation and that the two men were not known to each other.
“Earlier in the evening, there was a meeting between the men. Later, the 35-year-old man returned to the Kingston Hotel where the incident took place,” Detective Acting Superintendent Reynolds said.
ACT Policing said they would like to sincerely thank members of the public who provided witness statements and information in relation to this matter.
