Queanbeyan will soon be home to a state-of-the-art, $30 million regional sports complex which will have the capacity to host state and national events and keep rising athletes in the region.

Member for Monaro John Barilaro, who was joined by the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mayor Tim Overall and the local sporting community at the proposed site, announced a $10 million NSW Government grant will kick off the project.

The proposed site for the complex is the former Fraser Park Speedway site, a 24-hectare greenfield site in South Jerrabomberra.

The draft master plan for the complex proposes four premier standard soccer pitches with two FIFA-certified synthetic pitches, two first-grade hockey pitches, three multi-sport fields for major football fixtures, a basketball stadium, player and official change rooms and toilets, spectator viewing areas and LED sports lighting.

It would also include an aquatic centre in a future stage.

Mr Barilaro said the new complex would meet community recreational and sporting needs now and into the future, enabling today’s rising stars to train and play at the facility.

“This sports hub will give our rising sports stars a training and competition home ground advantage, reducing both the time required and expense associated with having to constantly travel to and from the ACT,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Queanbeyan already has a strong reputation as a launch pad for sports talent and this new facility will help retain future champions across a range of codes through partnerships with Football NSW, Capital Football, Hockey NSW and ACT, and Touch NSW.

“The NSW Government is absolutely committed to building the right facilities and infrastructure to make regional NSW a great place to live, where you can have a fantastic career and lead a great lifestyle – and this project ticks both boxes.”

Queanbeyan-Palerang Mayor Tim Overall welcomed the NSW Government funding and said the council will also be financially contributing to the project.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled, sporting facilities are the heart and soul of regional communities,” Cr Overall said.

“This complex will be an important space for people to come together in celebration of a healthy and active lifestyle, whether they are running on the field or cheering on their favourite teams and players from the sidelines.”

NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the complex is one of 21 significant projects announced through the $100 million Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund, which is helping to raise the standard of regional sports facilities.

“When finished, this state-of-the-art complex at Queanbeyan will have the capacity to host state and national events, attracting both local fans and tourists while also creating jobs and boosting community spirit and pride,” Mr Ayres said.

“Excitingly, this new complex will also bridge a gap for pre-elite talent and coaches who are developing their skills and abilities with a goal of one day being accepted into the AIS in Canberra.”
