Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman and the community’s advocacy for a MRI machine for the region has paid off.
An additional $15 million was revealed in the 2021-2022 NSW Budget announced on Tuesday, 22 June, for the purchase of a MRI machine for Goulburn Base Hospital.
The MRI machine will be located inside the new four-storey Clinical Services Building, which is currently under construction next to the existing hospital and due to be completed later in 2021.
Currently, Goulburn residents have to travel as far as Canberra or Bowral for imaging to detect traumatic brain injuries, strokes, dementia, infections and tumours.
After hearing from locals about the need for a MRI machine, Ms Tuckerman made representations to the NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard and launched a petition.
“In just over two weeks, more than 2000 people signed the petition demonstrating community support – it was clear that Goulburn needs a MRI machine,” she said.
In addition to a MRI machine, the funding will go towards developing a Transitional Living Unit for people with brain injuries, and purchasing a new sterilising unit and CT scanner.
“I thank the Minister for Health, the Hon Brad Hazzard MP, for listening to our community,” said Ms Tuckerman. “I am thrilled this brings the redevelopment of Goulburn Base Hospital to $165 million.”
