Goulburn Mulwaree Council says it is pleased with a Federal Government funding boost of $1.584 million that will go towards projects such as the new waste management centre and Wollondilly River Walkway.
The funding was received as part of the second round of the government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program which targets economic stimulus.
Council must spend the funding before 31 December, 2021, and hopes to divide it between the upgrade of its new waste management centre, landscaping at Roberts Park in Goulburn, new toilet facilities on the Wollondilly River Walkway, and footpaths that are being considered in the villages of Marulan, Tarago, Tallong, Towrang and Bungonia.
Plans for the waste management centre, known as Re-Use Goulburn (RUG), were approved in 2020 and will transform the city’s traditional landfill into a modern waste management centre.
The centre will encourage recycling with a Re-Use Hub, or tip shop, that will repair and on-sell items such as furniture and building products, and an undercover area for people disposing of their waste.
These projects will need to be approved by the government before council can go ahead, however Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Bob Kirk said the initial news is positive.
“Although this funding has come about due to the recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been a positive for our region in that we can get on with a number of projects that may have otherwise likely stayed on the drawing board for a number of years,” he said.
This week, Mayor Kirk and Member for Hume Angus Taylor checked on the progress of projects that received funding in round one of the Federal Government’s program.
“That money is being utilised for the new amenities building at Cookbundoon Sports Fields, new public toilets for Tallong, and further footpaths in Marulan and Tarago,” said Mayor Kirk.
