For most, the closest you’ll get to Government House is a bike ride around the lake or packaged highlights of newly sworn-in politicians on the nightly news.

But this Saturday (October 6), you have the opportunity to go ‘beyond the gates’ at the end of Dunrossil Drive and discover the house and gardens of Australia’s Vice-Regal residence at the Government House Spring Open Day.

Manager of Property and Services at Government House Matt Malone said the free event would allow people to explore one of the country’s most iconic residences.

“Open Day is about letting people experience the beauty and history of Government House, and better understand what the Governor-General does,” he said.

“Visitors can view the grounds and gardens at leisure, and they’ll see the rooms in the House where the Governor-General meets with world leaders and other VIPs. Open Day also allows visitors to see the art, objects and furniture provided by partners such as the Australiana Fund and the National Gallery of Australia.”

The official residence in Yarralumla holds its open days twice a year, but unlike most open homes, the owners will be there to greet the visitors.

Throughout the day, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Lady Cosgrove and staff from Government House will be on hand to answer your questions and share perspectives of life at one of Australia’s most iconic residences.

Visitors will get the chance to tour many parts of the house’s gardens, as well as the opportunity to get an up-close look of the drawing room, dining room and many extravagant hallways.

While Government House Open Day will have a number of food and beverage providers on site – including the SES – visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch and relax within the grounds.

This year, Government House Open Day is being held on the same date as Parliament House Open Day, with a complimentary bus service between the two locations and other attractions in the ACT.

Leaving the City Interchange every 20 minutes, the bus stops at the City Interchange, Regatta Point (for Floriade), Parkes (the public carpark on Langton Crescent), and of course, Parliament House and Government House.

Visitors to both Government House Open Day and Parliament House Open Day are encouraged to make use of free parking at Parkes, Parliament House and Government House, and take the bus service between locations.
