Eurobodalla Shire Council is forging ahead with plans to develop a network of mountain bike trails in the Mogo area, with the burnt bushland caused by recent fires providing an unexpected perk for the project.
Adventure trail company Dirt Art has been appointed to create the Adventure Trail Hub, which will benefit from improved visibility of the lay of the land, council’s director of planning Lindsay Usher said.
“Mogo was devastated in the bushfires. The Adventure Trail Hub will be an important part of the recovery process for the village and for growing Eurobodalla’s visitor economy,” Mr Usher said.
“Now, with undergrowth burnt away allowing clear sightlines, it’ll be easier to identify the best routes to ensure the best possible trail network.”
Dirt Art has designed and created many high use bike trails, including the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Project.
The company’s managing director Simon French said his team is keen to map out the new recreation and tourism project for Mogo.
“You can expect a forward-looking plan with new trails for local riders and a number of high-quality trail experiences to attract visiting riders to Mogo,” Mr French said.
The establishment of a trail network will provide a boost for the local economy, Mr Usher said.
“Stage one of the project, which took place in August 2019, involved stakeholder workshops that identified issues and opportunities for the Adventure Trail Hub. Stage two will layout the trail network – around Mogo village, Deep Creek Dam and surrounds – in detail, and the infrastructure and facilities needed to open up event opportunities and encourage more visitors to the region,” he said.
The Mogo Adventure Trail Hub project is being funded by the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.
