An ongoing campaign to clean up Bega Valley’s streets has been launched, with local identity and ‘superhuman’ Dane Waites at the forefront.
Bega Valley Shire Council Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said the ‘Give Dane a Clean Run’ campaign was devised by Bournda Environmental Education Centre and Bega Tathra Safe Ride, and is fronted by an inspiring local member of the community.
“Everyone knows Dane from his superhuman achievement of running more than 4000km from Perth to Pambula in 2017,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.
“He did this for a great cause to raise awareness of what it’s like to live with autism, and I’m pleased to see Dane back again raising awareness for the welfare of every person living in the Bega Valley shire.”
Mr Fitzpatrick said as a runner who often makes his way from one town to the next, Mr Waites has seen plenty of roadside litter.
“Dane, along with just about everyone else who walks, runs, rides a bike or pushes a pram anywhere in the shire, would love to get out and about without litter being part of the experience,” he said.
As part of the campaign, the community is encouraged to grab a bag and gloves, pick a path or roadside and spend a few minutes picking up litter.
“Do it daily, weekly or whenever you can, and together with Dane, we’ll all end up with cleaner pathways and roads that add to our enjoyment of getting outdoors,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.
Participants are also encouraged to separate recyclables to keep waste out of landfill. Plastics, glass, paper and cardboard goes in residents’ yellow bins, and soft plastics can be bagged up and taken to REDcycle bins at participating supermarkets.
