'Amazing' effort sees Selwyn Snow Resort return bigger and better after bushfires

After a hard three-year journey since devastating bushfires destroyed the Selwyn Snow Resort in January 2020, the complex has officially reopened.

The resort’s grand reopening was made even more special with the presence of NSW Premier Chris Minns.

The Premier unveiled the commemorative Selwyn Centre Plaque, marking the official celebration of the resort’s renaissance.

Following the devastating Black Summer bushfires in 2020, the resort has been transformed with the opening of the significantly expanded and integrated ”Selwyn Centre” on 10 June.

The new Selwyn Centre houses an expanded ski and snowboard hire area, enhanced food and drink offerings, improved toilet amenities, and now a plaque marking the official opening.

The ceremony took place at the resort on Friday, 21 July.

Mr Minns, along with other distinguished guests, including the Member for Monaro Steve Whan and Environment Minister Penny Sharpe, joined resort officials, staff and excited visitors to mark the momentous event.

The Selwyn Centre Plaque stands as a symbol of the resort’s commitment to delivering exceptional winter experiences and its deep-rooted connection to the community.

As the Premier unveiled the plaque, he expressed his appreciation for Selwyn Snow Resort’s contribution to the region’s tourism and recreational opportunities.

Mr Minns praised Blyton Group chairman Kevin Blyton and the team for their outstanding efforts, saying: “I just think Kevin and the team deserve enormous credit because this is a real passion project. They’ve pulled off a miracle; it’s amazing.”

Mr Blyton thanked Mr Minns for gracing the event.

He also emphasised his commitment to his venue’s core strength.

“Selwyn is back doing what we do best, lift tickets at half the price of other resorts,” he said.

”And that’s what we’re all about, offering affordable skiing.”

Families love spending time at Selwyn, and it’s ideal for beginners or those who have never seen snow before.

Selwyn originated from Kiandra, a stone’s throw away. Kiandra was the birthplace of the first ski club in the world, established in the 1860s.

Skiing began at Selwyn in 1966 when a portable rope tow built by founder Colin Myers was installed on the run we now know as Township. The rope tow was so successful that it continued for several years.

Back then, life was simple. Tickets were sold out of a duffle bag at the bottom of the lift. Tins of pineapple juice were the only commodity on sale, offered out of a makeshift shopfront in Colin’s car.

In July 2016, Selwyn was sold to Selwyn Snow Resort Pty Ltd and is now a part of the Blyton Group of companies.

In 2019/2020, the Black Summer bushfires swept through the mountains, destroying Selwyn’s infrastructure and the environment, and impacting the local community.

Today, Selwyn is bustling with adventure and fun.
